Deventer is an old city, mainly located on the east bank of the
IJssel.
The founding of Deventer is attributed to the
monk
Lebuinius who build a wooden church here in 768. Pagan
Saxons burned it down but Lebuinius rebuilt his church and was buried
there in 775.
A band of
Vikings ravaged
Zutphen in 882 and moved on to sack and burn Deventer as well, including the
Lebuinius church.
The town was rebuilt and over the next centuries Deventer became a major trading city, especially after
joining the Hanseatic League in the 13th century.
The industrial revolution of the 19th century turned Deventer in an industrial city. Some industry remains but
today retail, services and healthcare drive the economy.
