The city sports many towers and hence is
sometimes called the Tower City.
First traces of habitation date back 15.000 years but the town proper started in 300 AD as
a fortified
Chamavi settlement.
The town was rebuilt and extra protected by a
circular rampart and a large moat.
As member
of the
Hanseatic League, Zutphen prospered in the 13th century and some of its historical buildings still show
the grandeur of that golden era.
