With less than 4000 inhabitants Leknes is one of the largest towns in the Lofoten.
Leknes has no real fishing history or pittoresque
towncenter but instead makes its money from trade and transportation.
Leknes Havn has become an important port
of call for cruise ships that unload droves of tourists for sightseeing tours.
The favorite destination is a scenic fishing hamlet called
Nusfjord on Flakstadøya island, some 30 km away.
Another point of interest is the red wooden Flakstad Kirke from 1780 with
its onion shaped tower.
Watch out for sheep and goats on grass-covered roofs, a local tradition.
But the
real gem of the Leknes region is the fantastic and diverse landscape, both inlands and seen from a boat.
In June 2013
our cruise ship Celebrity Constellation dropped anchor at Leknes Havn and we visited the inland. Later that evening we sailed
out along the impressive Lofoten coastline on our way to Svalbard.
