Oslo was founded as a trading center in the middle of the 11th century and in 1300 the city became the capital of early
Norway.
The
Black Death took a heavy toll in 1350 and several fires consumed the wooden houses. For many centuries Oslo
was subordinate to Copenhagen until the
union with Denmark ended in 1814.
Today greater Oslo and its harbor is Norways economic center
and the seat of the country's government.
Although Oslo is a very expensive place, it is also one of Europe's fastest growing
cities.
In 2011 the white supremist
A Breivik attacked the city center with a selfmade car bomb, killing 8 people, after which
he moved on on to kill 69 innocent youngsters at Utøya island.
We visited Oslo in June 2014.
