Dinosaur National Monument
In 1909 the fossils were discovered by Earl Douglas who shipped many of them to the Carnegie Museum
in Pittsburg.
As a result the public interest in dinos soared and in 1915 the quarry was declared a National Monument.
In
1938 the area was enlarged to include Echo Park with its imposing canyons of the Green and Yampa River.
At the
Quarry Exhibit
Hall there are dinos on display and a hugewall holding some 1500 embedded dinosaur bones.
From here the
Harpers Corner
Road will bring youy deep into the park where a
couple of relatively easy trails lead you to overviews with spectacular
panoramas of the deep canyons created by the Green and Yampa River that come together at Steamboat Rock.
We visited Dinosaur
National Monument in August 1992.
