Girdwood is a ski resort in a valley at the Turnagain Arm east of Anchorage.
It is located in the Chugach Mountains and
surrounded by several glaciers and snow-capped mountains.
Most popular is the ski resort on Mount Alyeska.
Here you can ski, snowboard, parasail or just enjoy the mountain
scenery.
There is also a very nice view on the Turnagain Arm and the Seward Highway.
Girdwood started at the end of
the 19th century under the name Glacier City as a settlement for miners that sifted the local creeks for gold.
The 1964
Good Friday earthquake had devastating effects, many of the houses in the original location disappeared in the Turnagain
Arm. The new Girdwood is located a few kms away from the water.
We rode the Alyeska Aerial Tramway in June
2007 and spend a few hours in the snow.
