the observation platform above the falls, it is a steep climb to arrive there
On her way down to the Atlantic Ocean the Skóga River passes many waterfalls, but the last one, the Skógafoss,
is the most
impressive of them all..
Here the water drops 60 meters over an ancient coastal cliff.
Its location close to the Ringroad makes
this waterfall one of Icelands major tourist attractions.
Weather permitting you can observe some nice rainbows.
For the adventurous
ones among us a very steep trail leads up-mountain to an observation post well above the falls. This trail continous to the popular Laugavegur trekking
route.
For some obscure reason old man Thrasi Thórólfsson, one of the first settlers here, did not want to share his wealth with
his offspring. Instead he hid it behind the waterfall. Only the ring of the treasure chest has been recovered sofar, it serves as
the door ring in the local church.
When we visited in July 2015 we did not bother to search for the treasure, the sight
of the Skogafoss itself wass already a nice treat.
