From the northern shore water spouts into the Hvita
river through underground canals in the porous layer of the Hallmundarhraun lavafield which covers a hard and impregnable
underground.
Just up-river of the Hraunfossar is the Barnafoss,
where according to legend two boys drowned when they tried
to negotiate a natural bridge.
The mother threw a spell on the bridge which collapsed soon after during an earthquake.
Nowadays
there is a sturdy foot bridge over the fall and we crossed that without problems when we visited this beautyful place on a rare
sunny morning in June 2015.
