La Paz is the highest unofficial capital city of the world. It sits in and around a valley in the Altoplano. People who can afford
it live down in the valley at 3200 meters, while poor people live above the rim at well over 4000 meters.
The
city was founded in 1548 at the end of the war of the Conquestadors and was given the official name Nuestra Seņora
de La Paz.
Presently the city has a population of about 1.5 million.
Traffic is a challenge and air pollution a real problem, but the
city has many interesting places to visit, like the Plaza Murillo,
the Gold Museum and of course the Witches Market.
We "did" La
Paz in June 2008.
