Port Douglas is a small tourist town on the east coast of Far North Queensland.
To the local Aboriginals the location was
known as Jabukanji.
In 1877 the Port Douglas township was established as port of entry for a local goldrush and soon exploded into
a major settlement. After the goldrush and a devastating cyclone the place dwindled into a tiny fishing community.
From the late
1980's onwards the town has recovered thanks to the tourist industry.
Port Douglas is the perfect homebase to dive theGreat Barrier Reef, explore the tropical Daintree Rainforest or to do an ecotour with the local Kuku Jalanji from Mossman Gorge.
Do
visit Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures to meet the local wildlife.
And after all that activity
you can relax at the famous Four Mile Beach and finish the day in one of the many restaurants and bars in the downtown area.
We visited
Port Douglas in July 1999 and returned in October 2004.
