a sideview of the American Falls with the Rainbow Bridge in the background
the American Falls, seen from Canada
these are the Horseshoe Falls, seen from Goat Island
it's about 55 meters all the way down
a Maid of the Mist enters the wet zone at the Horseshoe
On its way from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario the Niagara River has to manage the mighty Niagara Falls where the water
drops a full 50 meters.
The name Niagara seems to stem from an Iroquois town called Ongniaahra.
The waterfalls are an important source of hydroelectric power.
The Rainbow Bridge connects
both sides
so tourists can watch the falls from an American and a Canadian perspective.
The Niagara Falls were first mentioned
in 1604 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who founded a few years later the city of Quebec.
We visited the Falls
in September 1992.
