This mosque
itself was build on the site of a 6th century Visigoth church where the many Counsels of Toledo were held.
Build in the
13th century the cathedral is seen as the top Gothic church of Spain.
Its outer dimensions are impressive but
the real treasures are inside. The many chapels a filled with the finest artworks.
The sacristy and vestuary have stunning
cieling frescos and the rooms are loaded with paintings from El Greco, Goya, Titian, van Dyck, Caravaggio and
many others.
The corridors in the cloister have large pastel colored frescos.
At the end is the Capilla de San
Blas with the white marble tombs of archbishop Pedro Tenorio and his secretary Vicente Balbao. As the chapel lies meters
below groundlevel the frescos are deteriorated.
