remains of an old lavatube
a huge weathered pillar
Kálfaströnd
The landscape around the Kálfaströnd peninsula on the eastshore of Lake Myvatn has the same origin as Dimmuborgir.

What you see are the remains from a huge lavaflow over a wet underground.
Steam explosions cracked up the lava and weathering over the ages did the rest, leaving only the hardest of rock standing as the wierdly formed pillars and ridges that dot the area.

Kálfaströnd is a nice place for a stroll along the lake, you may or may not encounter ducks or other waterfowl but sure will be impressed by the strange landscape with its towering pillars.

The peninsula got its name from the nearby centuries old farm.
