A Stork-billed Kingfisher, you only see them along the Kinabatangan
a Monitor Lizard is taking a nap
excursions are done in small, open boats

High up in the tree we see two Rhinoceros Hornbills

a Macaque is having a snack
below a crock is waiting, you never know...
now why would they call this Oriental Darter a Snakebird ?
searching for wildlife along the Kina Batangan River
When you want to meet the wildlife of Borneo up close you should consider exploring the Kinabatangan River in northern
Sabah.
At the lower reaches of the river, wildlife is abundant, particularly In the Sukau area.
Here you have a high chance to
spot the peculiar Proboscis Monkey and watch them jump from tree to tree.
Macaques are also frequently spotted
and, if you
are lucky, you may get a glimpse of Orangutans or even an elusive Asian Elephant.
Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards and many species of
bird like colorful Kingfishers, agile Snakebirds and massive Rhinoceros Hornbills are also often sighted.
In August 2004
we stayed a few days in Old Ben's Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge to explore the Kinabatangan and its creeks at dusk
to search for wildlife.
And wildlife was what we got. Despite low light conditions under the trees we spotted scores of Borneo's rich
and diverse fauna.
It was certainly one of our most memorable nature trips.
transportation is by small river taxis
at the Sukau River Lodge people wait for the river taxi
Despite low light and a wobbly boat I did get a reasonable shot of this Blue-eared Kingfisher
Mangrove Herosn are always at the lookout for a tasty fish
the evening falls quickly here. Dinnertime!
we watch a Proboscis family jump from tree to tree. And there is no net
