Insects of the uiterwaarden: Flies

The grasslands of the nature reserves in Empel and Hedel are sparingly grazed by small herds of cattle that leave most of the flowering plants intact.
This type of nature management provides a diverse and rich habitat for scores of insects like flies.

Most people hate flies and their annoying behavior, but what they miss is the shimmering beauty of this disgusted species that has been buzzing around on our earth for hundreds of million years.

In the Netherlands there are at least 3500 different species of flies!

Flesh flies, Bottle flies, Dung flies, Hover flies, Drone flies and Scorpion flies all show up here.
