Middelburg
Middelburg started in 850 as a circular rampart to protect against Vikings who used the island of Walcheren as homebase for their brutal raids on places like England.

From the 11th century onwards Middelburg became the major transit port for the export of Flemish Broadcloth with England and other countries. Hence the town grew in importance and was granted city rights in 1217.

At the start of the Dutch Revolt Middelburg sided with the Spanish, but after a long siege the city fell to the Geuzen in 1572 and was firmly brought into the ranks of the Dutch Republic.

The city was a founding member of the VOC and the WIC and participated actively in the Atlantic Slave Trade. All this brought great wealth to Middelburg.

Middelburg was shelled in 1940 by the Germans and in the Battle of the Scheldt of 1944 bombarded by allied planes.

After the war the historic buildings were restored, like the  Middelburg Abbey with the Lange Jan tower, the St Joris Doelen, the Town Hall and the Kloveniersdoelen.

We visited Middelburg in June 2021
