The
Western Brook Pond is a fjord-like freshwater lake with a very interesting geological history.
Over the last 2 million
years there have been 20 major glaciations with the Long Range Mountains covered by ice sheets.
Glaciers flattened the mountain
tops and in their flow to the sea created deep troughs.
When the climate warmed again after the
last ice age, the glaciers
melted and the land rebounded. One of the troughs was cut off from the sea and slowly filled with freshwater, creating Western
Brook Pond.
Today the lake is one of Gros Morne's main attractions and in the season there are several guided boat tours
per day. From the ship's deck you can marvel at the high towering cliffs and many waterfalls, notably the
Pissing Mere Falls near the end of the fjord.
To reach the boat dock you have to hike the 3km long Western Brook Trail over the
coastal bog which is a treat in itself.
We did the Western Brook Pond boat tour on a sunny day in September 2017.
the restaurant at the boat dock allows for great views. And they serve hotdogs
