Ljouwert (Leeuwarden)
Ljouwert (Leeuwarden in Dutch) is the capital of the province of Fryslân.

Already in Roman times people carved out a living here, and to protect against the high tides of the Middelzee they built their homes and churches on terps.

In 1435  three terp-villages merged into one and became Ljouwert.

In the 16th and 17th century the town flourished because the Frysian branch of the House of Orange-Nassau had set up house here.
Many monumental buildings date from that time, like de Waag, the Kanselarij,  the Princessehof, the Stadhouderlijk Hof, the City Hall and the ill-fated leaning Oldehove tower.

Ljouwert is start and finish of the heroic Alvestêdetocht, a 200 km long skating contest on natural ice.

In 2018 the town is the European Capital of Culture, an event shared with the Maltese capital Valetta.
A great way to see the old city is thecanal tour in a modified praam.

We visited Ljouwert in July 2017.
