Tiananmen square is located in the center of Beijing. It is named after the front gate of the Forbidden City, just
north of it.
The square dates back to 1651 and was
changed and enlarged several times, notably in 1959 when Mao ordered it to have place for over 500.000 souls.
Notable
events were in 1949 when Mao proclaimed the PRC and the violent student protests in 1976 and 1989.
We strolled
the square on a rainy day in May 1991 and again on a sunny day in May 2004.
