It was once home to the Paracas culture, excavations
at the Necropolis of Wari Kayan high up the Cerro Colorado have yielded lots of bodies but also ceramics and intricate textiles.
The
peninsula features yellow colored wastelands combined with spectacular shorelines. This combination is pretty unique and adds
to the feeling that you are in a special place.
One of the many bays called Lagunillas has a litlle fishing harbor and
sports a simple restaurant, ideal for lunch.
Close to Paracas city there is a flamingo reservation.
In 2007 a devastating
magnitude 8.0 earthquake rocked the region, killing many in the towns of Pisco and Ica.
It also destroyed Cathedral Rock,
the landmark rock formation of the peninsula. You can still see the deep cracks in the rocks nearby.
