the Catedral Basílica San Carlos Borromeo at the Plaza de Armas was built in 1757
The SS Olanta was build in England. The bits and pieces were carried by railway to Puno

a taxi, Puno-style
Puno
Puno sits on the shore of Lake Titicaca at an altitude of 3860 meters above sea level.
Since all space on the flat parts is already occupied, the city encroaches the surrounding hills to even higher elevations.

San Juan Bautista de Puno was founded in 1668,  to be changed to San Carlos de Puno a few years later.
The baroque Puno cathedral at the Plaza de Armas dates back to 1757.

Presently the city is an important center for lifestock and agricultural goods. Income from tourism is increasing, but the major revenues comefrom the black market for smuggled goods from so much cheaper Bolivia.

We were in town in June 2008, but lacked the time to explore the city proper.
