Taquile island in Lake Titicaca
The locals are called Taquileños and they govern their
island still very much in an old fashioned Inca-style.
The island is named after a Spanish count that got the island in his possession
after the conquistadors took it from the Incas.
Tanquile has fantastic views over the lake with the snowcapped
mountains of the Cordillera Real range on the horizon.
The place is a major tourist center known for the high quality handwoven
clothing and the sing and dance performances by local groupes.
We paid a visit to Taquile island in June 2008
