a few hundred milliseconds later the steam becomes visible
the water is hot, really hot
in the distance Strokkur has just finished an eruption
quiet for the moment, the Great Geysir, once the prima donna of Iceland
a hot spot further uphill
just before the eruption the water starts bulging
Haukadalur is a very active geothermal valley in the southwest of Iceland.
Bubbling hot water in colorfull potholes,
sulpherous fumes and spouting geysers dominate the slopes of the Laugarfjall hill.
The place was first described
at the end of the 13th century after an earthquake. Tremors continuously reshape the area and have for now silenced the mother of
all geysers, the Great Geysir.
Strokkur is pesently the main attraction, erupting to heights of 40 meters every 5 minutes or
so. The bulging of the water just before the hot steam violently breaks through is a fascinating view that be nicely captured
with a fast multishot camera.
We witnessed several eruptions of the Strokkur.
