The road has a total length of only 104 km, but it takes you a full day back and forth. Not only because of
the 600+ curves and 42 one-lane bridges, but because you will most probably make frequent stops to take in the fantastic
scenery.
After reaching a quiet and serene
Hana, you may want to continue to the secluded
Hamoa Beach. Or travel 15
km further east to
Oheo Gulch near Kipahulu.
The Hana Highway was built in 1910 and most of the constructions
are still original.
An engineering job well done it seems.
In 2000 the road was designated as Hana Millennium Legacy
Trail by then President Bill Clinton.
We have negotiated and survived all the curves and narrow bridges of the
Hana Highway several times since 1993.
In 2003 we broadened our perspective with a helicopter ride that broadly followed the highway
along the rugged and lush East coast of Maui.
