Mogrovejo is a historical site located in the Liebana valley on road CA-185 from Potes to the Fuente De cable car.
The origins are
lost in the mist of time but somewhere in the 13th century the name changed from Luarna to Mogrovejo. Both names relate to an old
and powerful family. Legend has it that a Mogrovejo banner carrier rode with Don Pelayo against the Muslim invaders of Asturias.
St
Turibius of Mogrovejo is the best know person of this age old family.
Mogrovejo is a picturesque little village with red tiled houses, tucked
away against the Andarra Massif. Some of the footage in the film Heidi, the Queen of the mountains was shot here.
Points
of interest are the pittoresque 17th century church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the 13th century tower of Pedro Ruiz de Mogrovejo
and the Mogrovejo School Museum.
Mogrovejo lies on the Vadinian Way, part of the Camino de Santiago.
We visited Mogrovejo in May 2019.
