Berlin
Alexander Platz is a famous square on the east side of the Spree River. It was named after the Russian tzar
Alexander
I who visited Berlin in 1805.
Close by is the 368 meters high
TV tower. Built in 1965 it was a showcase of the capabilities
of the communist regime.
Presently the tower is a real tourist magnet, drawing more than 1 million visitors per year that enjoy
the spectacular views from above.
Berlin's town hall houses the government of the Federal State of Berlin. The building is red
and aptly called das
Rotes Rathaus.
Nearby and bordering the Spree River is Berlin's old center, called the
Nikolaiviertel with a history going back at least 800 years. Some of the landmarks here are the
St. Nicholas church, several
recently reconstructed old houses and the statue of St George battling it out with the dragon.
At the banks of the Spree you
can inspect the Mühlendamm Lock or one of the many watering holes where they serve a cold beer.
We visited in September
2015.
Berlin Alexander Platz is located directly adjacent to the Alexander Platz railway station.
the Fountain of Friendship between Peoples dates from the DDR times but is still going strong
