The eastern end of Amelân is dedicated to the Nature Reserve
Oerd and de Hôn.
In the Hôn mother nature is working
hard to build new dunes, extend and vegetate the mudflats and constantly re-arranging gullies and shorelines.
Het Oerd
is older and features a more diverse landscape with high overgrown dunes and valleys with tidal creeks. There is an lookout
on top of the Oerdblinkert, with 24 meters the highest dune of the Reserve.
More to the west the inhabited world starts with the hamlet Kooiplaats and the small
village of
Buren (once known for its beachcombers) and the more busy
Nes.
Nes and its beach are Amelân's
major tourist destination. Some locals complain that in summer they feel overrun and Amelân as they know it is quickly
disappearing...
All those tourists (more than 600.000 of them) arrive by ferry from Holwerd and dock at the pier near Nes.
