New York City
With almost 9 million citizens New York City is the most populous place of the USA.
The city sits at the mouth of the Hudson River that empties in a large natural harbor.
Today NYC is the financial, economic and cultural center of the USA.

It al started in Lower Manhattan as a Dutch trading settlement  called New Amsterdam. In 1667 the Dutch formally ceded the place to the English in exchange for the Spice Island Run. It was renamed New York.

Historically New York is the entry point for immigration to the USA. By the end of the 19th century many millions of European immigrants had passed the Statue of Liberty on their way to Ellis Island for disembarkment and screening.
New York continued to grow, skyscrapers were build like the Empire State Building (1931) and the two towers of the World Trade Center.

On September 11 2001, Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi flew their hijacked planes into the WTC towers, killing 2800 people.

We visited New York City several times, the pictures are from 1988 and 1990.
