The
Rijksmuseum is the National Museum of the Netherlands.
Since its creation in 1800, the museum was housed in several locations in The
Hague, Haarlem and Amsterdam.
Finally, in 1885 the Rijksmuseum was opened in a dedicated building, designed by
Pierre Cuypers and
located at the Museum square in Amsterdam. Over time several modifications and additions took place which dilluted the original
design.
In 2003 a major restoration started. When finished in 2013 it had cost 375 M Euros and had taken 5 years longer then
planned.
The museum has a very large collection, among them many paintings from world known artists like Rembrandt,
Frans Hals, Jan Steen and others from the Dutch Golden Age. But there are also paintings from Van Gogh and other impressionists.
We visited the Rijksmuseum in September 2016 to see the newly acquired
Marten
and Oopjen wedding portraits by Rembrandt.
