Heeg is as small village in the southwest of
Fryslân (Friesland in Dutch), a northern province of the Netherlands.
Locals speak Frisian,
one of the four official languages spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Heeg is located at the Hegemer Mar, a lake
that used to be abundant with eel.
The Londoners were so fond of this eel that traders from Heeg could
use the Dutch Mooring near the London Tower for free.
The eel business continued into the first half of the 20th century.
In the 17th and 18th century skippers in Heeg made their money by hauling hay to the always hungry horses of the notables in
Amsterdam.
Heeg has three churches, one of them, the Hagha church dates from 1745.
A couple of monumental houses reflect
the wealth gathered from the eel trade.
Today Heeg is an important watersport center and in the summer months the place
get pretty crowded, much to the pleasure of the owners of the many pubs, restaurants and souvenir shops.
We visited Heeg on a
quiet day in September 2015.
