Naxi and Dongba culture in Lijiang
(also known as Nakhi). The Naxi
are officially recognized by the PRC as an ethnic group.
The roots of the Naxi seem to go back to the
Qiang people in
the 2d millennium BC.
The culture centers around the age old
Dongba religion that has a strong focus on harmony with
nature but was later influenced by Chinese Confucianism.
The Naxi entity encompasses own language, music,
architecture and dress, all of which is actively preserved and very much on display everywhere in town.
Circle Dances are performed
in the streets and squares of Dayan and in the evening you can enjoy traditional Dongba shows in one of the many small
theaters.
We experienced a touch of the age-old and still vivid Naxi culture when we visited Dayan in August 2005.
Unfortunately
it was raining all day but that seems to be the normal weather here in August.
at the main square the Circle Dance begins
the women all wear the traditional Naxi dress
to them it seems to be serious business
the wall shows a colorful depiction of the old Dongba language
the doorman is all dresses up
so do the men, but there is some Han Chinese influence here
