Of course Berlin has more on offer than just the tourist magnets Brandenburger Tor, Alexander Platz Spree River or the old part
of town Nikolaiviertel.
Potzdamer Platz is a square with a rich history that became Europe's building hotspot after
the 1990 German Unification. Nowadays shining high rise buildings dominate the skyline here and only a line on the ground marks
the place where once the infamous
Berlin Wall stood.
Checkpoint Charlie is another relick of the Cold War where you
can now have your picture taken in front of the US Army guardhouse.
Close by is the
Blackbox Kalter Krieg museum with
some of the last remaining original parts of the Berlin Wall.
Another landmark is the
Berlin Cathedral from 1905. Badly damaged
in the war and afterwards by the communist DDR regime, efforts to restore the church to its original splendor are hampered by a lack
of funds.
We visited Berlin in September 2015.
