Malmö and its urban surroundings is one of Swedens largest Metropolitan areas.
The city was first mentioned in 1275 and at that
time belonged to Denmark.
Later the herring industry became a main part of a thriving economy.
In 1658 the region came
under control of Sweden, much to the chagrin of Denmark that tried to retake it by force. But the city's heavy fortifications
prevailed.
In the 19th century Malmö became an industrial powerhouse with shipyards and textile industries. This lasted till
1970 when the industries collapsed and the city plunged in a deep recession.
At the end of the 20th century Malmö successfully
refocused on culture and knowledge and better times arrived.
Since 2000 the
Øresund Bridge just south of tyhe city
connects Denmark with Sweden.
We visited Malmö in September 2015.
