Yellowstone Upper and Lower Falls
The
Yellowstone River winds north through Yellowstone Park. It passes through Yellowstone Lake and is still a relatively calm stream at
bisonrich Hayden Valley.
But at the
Upper Falls the action starts: here the water drops 30 meters and then roars to the
Lower Falls for another 100 meters drop before entering the extremely colorful
Yellowstone Grand Canyon.
The river leaves the park
at Gardiner in Montana on its long way to the Missouri River.
French trappers named the river Roche Jaune which translated to
Yellowstone.
The easiest
way to see the spectacle is driving the Canyon Loop Road and use the many vantage points.
Uncle Tom's Trail leads you
down 170 meters to an observation point with a spectacular view of the Lower Falls.
The last time we saw the falls was in June
1992.
