harbor seals dozing on a buoy
another whale closes in on our ship
how high can he fly?
and here is another one
in the distance a humpback whale waves hello
he may be battle scarred, but still holds on to his females
we pass a Stellar Sea Lion colony
a Dall's porpoise shows us the way
what's up?
Wildlife in the Prince William Sound
The
Prince William Sound is rich in fish, including salmon and halibut. That draws predators, not only humans but also all
kind of marine wildlife.
A visit to the Columbia and or Meares glacier aboard one of Stan Stevens ships will almost inevitably bring
you in contact with harbor seals, sea lions, sea otters and humpback whales.
If you are lucky you may spot a pot of killer whales
or dolphins, and sightings of cormorants and puffins are common.
We sailed the Sound in June 2007 and were treated on a real
show of breaching humpback whales, one very close to the ship.
Dall's porpoises, dozing seals on buoys, seals and sea otters
on ice floes and agressive sea lions on the rocks completed the feast.
sea otters watch us sail by
this one is showing of his flippers
WOW that was close
you do not need to speak Sealion, the message is clear: go away or else......
these seals are using an ice-floe from Columbia Glacier
