Whittier
The only way to reach Whittier by land is through the 4 km long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. This one-lane tunnel is used for both cars and trains, not simultaneously though.
It was build as a railway tunnel  in WW II as reaction to the threat of the Japanese Empire. Once ready Whittier became the main entry to Alaska for US soldiers.

The Denali Express nonstop rail service starts from Whittier and makes this port increasingly attractive for cruise ships.
The place is also port of call for the Alaska Marine Highway linking Whittier to Valdez. via the Prince William Sound.

Most of the 200+ residents of Whittier live in the Begich Towers, a 14 story building.

Along the harbor there are many small shops that cater for the tourists to Denali or Valdez.

We visited Whittier in June 2007 to take the ferry to Valdez.
