Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve
Established
in 1979, the reserve sits at altitudes of 3000 m and higher and features high altitude Andean plains, natural and artificial
lakes, lush meadows and several 6 km high volcanoes like
Misti and
Chachani.
A dozen small communities populate
the area, people eke out a harsh living by herding llamas.
The flora consists of shrubs, grasses and herbs and provides food for
the local herds and wildlife.
There are even
some frogs and toads.
Most tourists pass through the Salinas on their way from Arequipa to Colca Canyon.
So did we in September
2010, but we made frequent stops to enjoy the scenic panoramas, visit a llama herd and watch the wildlife.
just outside Arequipa we stop for a nice panorama
we stop for some refreshments
