Pisaq was a town in the Sacred Valley.
It was built by the Incas in the 1450's maybe as part of a defensive line to protect their
capital Cuzco.
The very steep hills in the area are littered with Inca terraces, some of which are still in use today.
Pizarro
and his conquistadors utterly destroyed the original town in 1530. Present day Pisaq was built lower in the valley around 1570.
Tourists
flock in droves to the place to see the
Inca Pisac Ruins and stroll over the colorful Sunday Market, which is also open on Tuesdays
and Thursdays.
We visited to market in June 2008.
