If for some odd reason you do not fancy the famous but strenuous 4-day trek along the
Inca Trail, the only other way is to travel
by train to
Aguas Calientes at the foot of the Machu Picchu mountain.
There are daily departures from Poroy near Cuzco to
Aguas Calientes. The train stops in
Ollantaytambo so you can climb aboard there also.
Make sure your trip is during daylight hours since the views along
the route are well worth it.
In January 2011 heavy rains blocked the railroad tracks and left more than 2000 tourists stranded
at Machu Picchu. They had to be evacuated by helicopter. Wonder if they enjoyed the view when they finally flew out....
