this party returns safely from a boat expedition
a boat moves out to inspect the icebergs from up close
the lake is not so large so you have a good view of the glacier snout
those dots in the water is a flock of ducks
the ice has all kind of colors
10 km west of the Jökulsárlón another glacier tongue of the Vatnajökull ice cap has created a lagoon named Fjallsárlón.
This
glacier lake is about 1 km north of the Ringroad, a dirtroad will bring you there. The parking lot sits a the foot of a
hill so you have to do a little bit of climbing but once on the top you are rewarded with a great panorama.
Fjallsárlón is smaller
than Jökulsárlón so you have a good view of the intricately shaped glacier snout.
As there is no easy way for the calved
icebergs to drift to the sea they have to melt away right in the lagoon.
to the west the ice-covered Örćfajökull active
volcano towers high above the lake. Unfortunately weather conditions often prohibit that view.
The place is much less developed
than its big brother to the east, there are no real facilities and markedly fewer tourist.
from above the glacier feeding the Fjallsarlon looks like a giant fishtail
from atop the hill you have a grand view of the glacier and its lake
the glacier snout has a peculiar texture
ducks hide between the melting chunks of ice
the remains of a bridge and the old Ringroad
