the start of the trail
Skutustadir is a small hamlet on the southern shore Lake Myvatn with a gasstation, hotels and restaurants. Most tourist come
here to see the famous pseudocraters of Skútustadagígar.
Pseudocraters are formed when hot lava flows over a wet area.
The water turns into steam which violently explodes through the lava, creating crater-like features. But the craters miss a volcanic
vent, hence the name pseudocrater.
Trails start from the parkinglot opposite the gasstation. The long trail will make
a full circle along the Stakholstjorn lake.
