Sydney is a global city and Australia's only real economic powerhouse. Although the official capital is Canberra, the country
is mostly governed from Sydney.
Aboriginals had made a living here for 50.000 years, before the British
First Fleet arrived
in 1788 and established a penal colony at
Botany Bay. The transports finally ended in the 1840's, after having dumped some 150.000
convicts on Australian shores.
Another
landmark is the
Sydney Opera House. This distinct building has been Sydney's hallmark ever since its completion in 1973.
