Highway 1 winds to the West and quickly becomes a gravel road
The snow covered Auriol Range with Mount Martha Black provides a spectacular backyard
we are hungry and decide to face that grumpy grizz
in Tok we have our first up close wildlife sighting, a huge stuffed moose
over the serene waters you can see the dust from the unpaved road
we follow the western shoreline of a very scenic Kluane Lake
inside we meet Mrs Claus, busy knitting something warm for winter
yes, Santa's summer residence is in North Pole
we follow the Richardson Highway to Fairbanks along theTanana River flood plains
after traveling 1422 miles we have reached the official end of the Alaska Highway
past Beaver Creek we leave Canada and enter the USA
from Whitehorse to Fairbanks
The
road turned unpaved and dusty, but the lake was of a serene beauty. Northern Woodland Caribou roam in this area,
but we did not see any.
After crossing the Canada-USA border we continued to Tok, an old
Athabascan settlement.
Do not miss that huge
stuffed moose on display near the All Alaska Gift shop.
The signpost for the official end of the Alaska Highway in Delta
Junction is a bit hidden and you can easily miss it.
After completing the ALCAN our vacation was not finished
yet and we traveled north on the Richardson Highway to Fairbanks, along the impressive Tanana River and passed Eielson Air Force
Base (no stopping and picture taking allowed).
Of course we had to stop at North Pole, to pay a visit to Santa Claus
and his wife Mrs Claus. But no sight of Rudolph.
at Haines Junction we pick up the Alaska Highway again, our direction is west to Fairbanks
a small lake near Snag Junction
we cross an icy Robertson River
outside we meet a reindeer, but judging by the color of the nose it is not Rudolf
this sign in Delta Junction looks excactly like the one in Dawson Creek!!
