Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah, a state in the Federation of Malaysia.
The city got its present name
in 1967, after the nearby Mount Kinabalu, Sabah's highest mountain located in Park Kinabalu, Malaysia's first World Heritage
Site.
It all started in 1899 as a deep water port for the British North Borneo Company under the name Api-api,
later renamed as Jesselton, after the vice chairman of the company.
In the early 20th century the town became an important trading
post for rubber.
During WW II, Jesselton was occupied by Japanese troops and heavily bombed by the allies, much
so that almost no building survived undamaged, hence the city lacks any historically interesting places.
Kota Kinabalu is
the port of entry for most tourists that visit other parts of Sabah, but the town sports a couple of up-scale beach resorts
for those that just come for the sun, beach and shopping.
In August 2004 we spent a few leasury days in a sunny Kota Kinabalu.
there is a fairly long boardwalk along the coastline
