The origins of
Cannes hark back to a small fishing village in the 2d century BC.
In the second half of the 19th century
British aristocracy discovered the area as an ideal place to pass the winter and soon luxury hotels and villas were built along
the waterfront the Promenade de la Croisette. This gave Cannes this special up-scale and luxury atmosphere that
persists even today.
The major annual event is the
Cannes Film Festival. The famous Carlton Hotel humbly hosts the attending
movie stars. It was here that
Grace Kelly met her Prince.
Le Suquet, the towns very old quarter is build on a small steep hill.
Apart from the many restaurants it features a clock tower and a museum.
