Neumayer Channel is a rather narrow but deep waterway, located between the Wiencke, Doumer and Anvers islands.
In 1898 Adrien de Gerlache named this winding passage after the German scientist
Georg von Neumayer
Most antarctic
cruises include a passage through this channel, and for very good reasons.
For when the weather gods cooperate, the view
of snow and glacier covered peaks, towering cliffs and secluded hideaways is simply breathtaking.
In February 2008 we navigated
the Neumayer Channel in a South-North direction, initially with a crisp blue sky and fair winds.
An ideal setting for enjoying the steady
flow of stunning panoramas and postcard-like views indeed.
In the afternoon the weather quickly changed for the worse and in the
evening we even had some snow on the deck.
All in all an unforgettable day.
